With a tight labour market in the Netherlands, many companies are looking for talent from abroad. Most companies start looking for talented people in the EU but even this market isn’t big enough in many cases. The labour market in the Netherlands
Many highly educated people in the Netherlands have a general background. Moreover, there are simply not enough specialists to fulfill open vacancies in for instance the IT or technical sector. Training of existing personnel might be a possibility but might take too much valuable time.

I want to employ an EU talent; what now?
An EU citizen can start working in the Netherlands without a formal immigration procedure. However, EU citizens must register in the Netherlands if they intend to stay longer than 4 months.
I am going to employ a non EU talent, what now?
As said before, for some open positions the EU isn’t big enough and you will have to search the world for good highly skilled talent. Non EU citizens need to undergo an immigration procedure. There are several possibilities to get your new talents in the Netherlands:
- the highly skilled migrant procedure for talents that you will have on a Dutch contract
- the intra corporate transferee procedure for talents that come on an assignment and stay on contract in a non EU country
- classical work permit + residence permit. This procedure is possible if you can prove that you’ve recruited for a longer period in the Netherlands and the EU without success.
- change of employer notification for talents that already were employed in the Netherlands and come to your company.
One of the requirements for the highly skilled migrant procedure is that your company holds a recognized sponsorship with the Dutch immigration authorities IND. If your company has been established in the Netherlands for more than 1,5 year you will need to submit other documents than if your company is relatively new to the Netherlands. In the current summer period the IND has indicated that the decision period is in probably all cases the legal one, 6 months. It is very important that you use the correct documents in your application to prevent delays.
If your own company is not (yet) a recognized sponsor you can opt to work with an employer of record. In this case, this is the formal employer of your new employee. After a successful application your employee can change employer so that she/he is on contract with your company itself.
