Hiring UK citizens post Brexit

UK citizens who will move to the Netherlands after January 31st yet before December 31st, 2020 will not have to undergo an immigration procedure. Hiring UK citizens post Brexit hasn’t changed from the old situation!

UK non EU country?

After January 31st the UK has formally become a non EU country. However, due to the transition period that lasts until December 31st, 2020 British citizens will still be seen as EU citizens.

What is the difference?

The difference is that for other highly skilled non EU citizens an immigration procedure will apply when they want to reside and work in the Netherlands. Local contract? Then the highly skilled migrant procedure is applicable. On assignment and on contract in a non EU country? Then the intra corporate transferee procedure will be used.

Hiring UK citizens post Brexit but before December 31st

As long as the transition period lasts UK citizens will only have to register at their local town hall. This is mandatory if you intend to stay in the Netherlands for a period longer than 4 months. Your new British employees will just have to bring their passports.

UK employees after December 31st, 2020

The Dutch immigration authorities IND advise to wait with further steps. They do not yet know what the immigration situation of British citizens will be after December 31st.

If you plan to hire a UK citizen you will have to make sure that he/she registers at town hall. Only registered UK citizens will receive information from the IND.
