UK citizens in the Netherlands: apply for your permit!

Now that the United Kingdom has left the EU UK citizens need a residence permit to legally reside in the Netherlands. There are about 45.000 UK nationals who live in the Netherlands. And this number is growing as Dutch statistics institute CBS says. More and more UK citizens move to the Netherlands. However, more than 3000 Britons haven’t applied for their Dutch residence permit yet. This is the reason why the application period has been extended to October 1, 2021.

I am a British citizen; what do I have to do?

If you already have your residence permit you’re all right. If you don’t you will have to take some action. There are a number of applications possible

  • a temporary permit (if you’ve lived in the Netherlands less than five years)
  • a permanent permit (if you’ve lived in the Netherlands more than five years)
  • a frontier working permit

Procedure for application UK citizens

You can apply for the residence permit yourself via the website of the Dutch immigration authority IND. There you will find the required form and further instructions.
